sand spit
Beach extending seaward
A sand spit is a narrow ridge of sand extending from a shoreline into a body of water, formed by longshore currents depositing sediment.
Spits often curve at their tips where currents shift direction.
They may eventually connect to another landmass, forming a tombolo, or enclose a lagoon.
The lighthouse stood at the end of a sand spit.
