coral cay
Tiny tropical landmass
A coral cay is a small, low-lying island formed from coral debris—sand, fragments, and sediment—accumulated on a reef.
Unlike rocky islands, cays are built entirely from organic material deposited by waves and currents.
They're common in tropical waters: The resort occupied a tiny coral cay in the Caribbean.
Also called a coral key.
