Fire Island

Long Island barrier

Fire Island is a barrier island off the southern shore of Long Island, New York, known for its beaches and car-free communities.

Several of its villages—particularly Cherry Grove and Fire Island Pines—have been prominent gay resort destinations since the mid-twentieth century, making "Fire Island" shorthand in LGBTQ culture for a certain kind of summer escape: We're renting a share on Fire Island this August.
