tidal current

Moon-driven water movement

A tidal current is the horizontal movement of water caused by the rise and fall of tides.

Unlike waves, which move water up and down, tidal currents flow parallel to the shore or through channels, reversing direction as tides shift between flood (incoming) and ebb (outgoing).

These currents are strongest in narrow passages, bays, and estuaries, where they can reach considerable speeds.

Sailors and navigators must account for tidal currents when plotting courses or timing harbor entries.
