groynes
Coastal erosion prevention
Groynes is the plural of groyne, a low wall or barrier built perpendicular to a shoreline to prevent beach erosion.
These structures trap sand carried by currents, building up the beach on one side: The groynes along the coast have helped preserve the sandy beach.
Spelled groins in American English.
