salt pan

Desert mineral crust

A salt pan is a shallow basin or depression where saline water evaporates, leaving behind a crust of salt.

These formations occur naturally in arid regions where lakes or seas once existed, creating flat expanses of crystallized minerals.

Salt pans are also constructed artificially for commercial salt production, where seawater is channeled into shallow pools and left to evaporate under the sun.

The flamingos gathered at the salt pan to feed on brine shrimp.
