saltern

Coastal evaporation works

A saltern is a place where salt is produced, typically by evaporating seawater or brine in shallow pools.

The term applies to both industrial salt works and natural salt marshes used for salt production: The ancient salterns along the coast have been worked for centuries.

Also called a saltworks or salt pan.
