saltpan

Dry lake bed

A saltpan is a shallow basin where seawater or brine evaporates, leaving behind salt deposits for harvesting.

The term also applies to natural depressions in arid landscapes where salt accumulates as water evaporates: The desert saltpan gleamed white under the sun.

Salt flats and salt lakes form through the same process.
