run-of-river

No dam needed

Run-of-river describes a type of hydroelectric power generation that uses the natural flow of a river rather than storing water behind a large dam.

A run-of-river plant diverts part of the current through turbines, then returns it downstream with minimal disruption to water levels: The run-of-river project had less environmental impact than a conventional dam.
