runners
Marathon race participants
Runners is the plural of runner—people who run, whether for exercise, sport, or errands.
The word extends to things that move or enable movement: sled runners glide over snow, drawer runners allow sliding, and table runners are narrow decorative cloths laid lengthwise.
In plants, runners are horizontal stems that spread along the ground to propagate: The strawberry plant sent out runners.
Runner beans climb supports as they grow.
