rum runner

Prohibition-era smuggler

A rum runner is a person who smuggles alcoholic beverages, especially during Prohibition in the United States (1920–1933).

The term also applies to the boats used for smuggling: The coast guard intercepted a rum runner off the Florida coast.

By extension, rum runner can describe anyone involved in illegal alcohol transport.
