bootlegging

Unlicensed liquor trade

Bootlegging is the illegal production, distribution, or sale of goods—originally and especially liquor.

The term became prominent during Prohibition in the United States, when smugglers concealed flasks in their boot legs.

Today it extends to unauthorized recordings, pirated software, or any contraband trade: bootlegging concert footage, a bootlegging operation for knockoff handbags.
