Sailor's tall tale
A sea story is a tale told by sailors or veterans, often embellished or entirely fabricated.
The term acknowledges that such stories grow taller with each telling: That's not a lie, it's a sea story.
In military slang, distinguishing a sea story from a lie is simple—a lie begins with "This is true," while a sea story begins with "No shit, there I was..."
