ringtail

Banded tail mammal

A ringtail is any of several animals with distinctive banded tails.

In North America, it's a cat-sized nocturnal mammal related to raccoons, native to the Southwest.

The name also applies to certain possums in Australia and to young golden eagles before they develop adult plumage.

Ring-tailed lemurs are sometimes called ringtails informally.
