Mexican wolf

Endangered desert predator

The Mexican wolf is a subspecies of gray wolf native to the southwestern United States and Mexico, the smallest and most genetically distinct of North American wolves.

Once nearly extinct, it has been the subject of intensive conservation efforts since the 1970s: Mexican wolves were reintroduced to Arizona in 1998.
