replicant
Engineered human copy
A replicant is a bioengineered artificial human, coined in the 1982 film *Blade Runner*.
Unlike mechanical robots, replicants are organic beings grown rather than built, virtually indistinguishable from humans except through specialized testing.
The term has spread beyond the film to describe any synthetic being designed to pass as human: The debate over AI consciousness echoes the replicant question.
