twin

Sibling from birth

Twin describes one of two offspring born from the same pregnancy.

Identical twins develop from a single fertilized egg and share the same genetic makeup; fraternal twins develop from separate eggs and are no more alike than ordinary siblings.

The word extends to anything that comes as a matched pair or close duplicate: twin beds, twin cities, a twin-engine plane.

As a verb, to twin is to pair or match: The program twins students with mentors.
