servomechanism

Self-correcting control system

A servomechanism is a device that automatically corrects its own operation by comparing its output to a desired result and adjusting accordingly.

The steering system in a car, a thermostat, and a cruise control are all servomechanisms—they sense deviation from a target and self-correct.

Often shortened to servo: The robot's servo failed mid-motion.
