refracting telescope

Lensed celestial viewer

A refracting telescope uses lenses rather than mirrors to gather and focus light.

Light enters through an objective lens at the front, which bends the rays to form an image that is then magnified by an eyepiece lens.

This was the first type of telescope developed, famously used by Galileo, and remains popular for amateur astronomy and terrestrial viewing.

Refractors excel at producing sharp, high-contrast images but become impractical at very large sizes due to the weight and cost of large glass lenses.
