reannexation

Taking territory back

Reannexation is the act of annexing again something that was previously annexed but subsequently separated or lost.

The term appears most often in historical and political contexts involving territorial disputes, where a nation seeks to reclaim land it once controlled.

The treaty prevented any future reannexation of the border provinces.

It can also apply to municipal contexts when a city reabsorbs territory it had previously released.
