railroad tie

Crosswise rail support

A railroad tie is one of the heavy wooden or concrete beams laid perpendicular to the rails of a train track, supporting the rails and keeping them at the correct distance apart.

Also called a sleeper in British English, ties are embedded in gravel or ballast and spaced at regular intervals along the track.

Discarded wooden ties sometimes find second lives as landscaping timbers or rustic construction materials.
