crossties
Track timber beams
Crossties are the wooden or concrete beams laid perpendicular to railroad tracks, supporting and spacing the rails.
Also called railroad ties or simply ties.
The term reflects their position crossing beneath the parallel rails: The old crossties had rotted and needed replacing.
In American usage, crosstie and railroad tie are interchangeable.
