tamping

Packing earth firmly

Tamping is the act of packing something down firmly through repeated pressing or light blows.

You tamp soil around a newly planted shrub to eliminate air pockets, or tamp tobacco into a pipe bowl before lighting.

In construction and railwork, tamping compacts ballast or earth to create a stable foundation.

The word also appears in demolition contexts, where tamping refers to packing material around an explosive charge to direct the blast.

He spent the afternoon tamping down the gravel path.
