rachis

Central feather axis

Rachis is a technical term in biology for the main axis or stem from which smaller parts branch off.

In botany, it refers to the central stalk of a compound leaf or flower cluster, the part that smaller leaflets attach to.

In ornithology, it's the shaft of a feather—the stiff central structure that the barbs extend from.

The plural may be rachises or rachides.
