margins

Borders of paper

Margins are the blank spaces surrounding text on a page, or more broadly, the edges or borders of any area.

In business, margin is the difference between cost and selling price—your profit margin.

To buy stock on margin is to borrow money from a broker to make the purchase.

Figuratively, margins suggest periphery or barely-sufficient amounts: living on the margins of society, winning by a narrow margin.

Something marginal exists at the edge, often implying minimal importance or viability.
