spikelet
Tiny grain cluster
A spikelet is the basic unit of a grass flower—a small cluster containing one or more tiny florets enclosed by protective scales called glumes.
Spikelets combine to form the seed heads of grasses, wheat, oats, and other cereals: Each spikelet on the wheat stalk contains two or three grains.
