quinsy

Peritonsillar abscess condition

Quinsy is an old-fashioned term for a severe abscess forming around the tonsils, causing painful swelling that makes swallowing difficult.

The condition, now usually called peritonsillar abscess, was once a serious and sometimes fatal complication of tonsillitis: The child nearly died of quinsy before antibiotics existed.
