grippe

Old-fashioned flu name

Grippe is an old-fashioned word for influenza—a contagious viral illness with fever, body aches, and respiratory symptoms.

The term was standard medical vocabulary into the early twentieth century but has been largely displaced by flu: Half the office was out with the grippe.
