apoplexy
Sudden cerebral collapse
Apoplexy is an old medical term for a stroke—a sudden loss of consciousness or function caused by bleeding in the brain.
The word survives mainly in figurative use, describing extreme rage or agitation: My father nearly had apoplexy when he saw the dent in his car.
The adjective apoplectic follows the same pattern, usually meaning furiously angry rather than medically stricken.
