A quadrat is a small, typically square frame used to mark off a sample area for ecological study—counting plants, insects, or other organisms within its bounds.
Biologists place quadrats randomly across a habitat to estimate population density or species distribution: We threw quadrats across the meadow to survey wildflower diversity.
