naturalists
Nature's devoted students
Naturalists study natural history—the observation and description of plants, animals, and ecosystems in their environments.
The term evokes field scientists with notebooks and specimen jars: Darwin was a naturalist before he was a theorist.
Naturalist also describes adherents of naturalism in philosophy (the view that only natural laws govern the world) or in literature (unflinching realism about human behavior).
In a minor sense, naturalist can mean nudist.
