field journal
Outdoor observation record
A field journal is a notebook used to record observations, data, and notes while working outdoors—in scientific research, naturalist expeditions, or archaeological digs.
Unlike lab notebooks kept in controlled settings, field journals capture information gathered in the environment being studied: She sketched the bird's markings in her field journal.
The practice emphasizes recording details immediately, before memory fades or conditions change.
