riffle

Thumb through pages

Riffle is a quick, casual way to flip through pages or papers without reading them carefully: She riffled through the stack of mail.

In card games, to riffle is to shuffle by splitting the deck and letting the edges interleave as they fall.

A riffle is also a shallow stretch of stream where water flows quickly over rocks, creating small ripples.

The word sometimes gets confused with rifle (to search through), but riffling implies speed and lightness rather than ransacking.
