pickguard

Guitar body protector

A pickguard is a thin plate attached to the body of a guitar or similar stringed instrument, protecting the finish from scratches caused by the pick during strumming.

Pickguards come in various shapes and materials—plastic, metal, tortoiseshell—and contribute to the instrument's aesthetic: I replaced the white pickguard with a black one.
