scratchplate
Fretboard body protector
A scratchplate is a protective panel on the body of a guitar, usually made of plastic, that shields the finish from pick scratches during strumming.
Also called a pickguard.
The term is more common in British English: The white scratchplate on a black Stratocaster is iconic.
