tuning pegs

Pitch control knobs

Tuning pegs are the small cylindrical posts on stringed instruments—guitars, violins, ukuleles—around which strings are wound.

Turning a peg tightens or loosens the string, raising or lowering its pitch.

They're mounted in the headstock and may be geared for finer control: The G string kept slipping because the tuning peg was worn.
