string quartet
Four bowed instruments
A string quartet is an ensemble of four musicians playing two violins, a viola, and a cello.
The term also refers to compositions written for this combination, a form central to classical chamber music since Haydn established it in the 18th century: Beethoven's late string quartets are considered among the greatest works in the repertoire.
