phaser
Sci-fi ray gun
A phaser is a fictional directed-energy weapon from *Star Trek*, capable of stunning or killing targets.
The word blends "phase" with the "-er" suffix, echoing "laser." Outside science fiction, a phaser is an electronic audio effect that creates sweeping, swirling sounds by splitting a signal and shifting one copy's phase: The guitarist ran the solo through a phaser pedal.
