Phasers are fictional energy weapons from the Star Trek universe, capable of stunning or killing targets and disintegrating matter.
The word blends "phaser" from "photon maser" (or similar technobabble origins).
Set phasers to stun has become a cultural catchphrase for taking a measured approach.
Outside science fiction, phaser may refer to an audio effects unit that creates a sweeping, spacey sound by shifting signal phase.
