Federation

United political body

A federation is a political entity formed by uniting smaller states or regions under a central government while allowing each member some autonomy: the Russian Federation, the federation of Australian states.

The term extends to any alliance of groups joined for a common purpose: a federation of labor unions.

To federate is to form or join such a union.
