debit

Ledger's red ink

Debit is a charge against an account—money withdrawn or owed.

In accounting, debits record what goes out or what's owed, balancing against credits.

A debit card draws directly from a bank account rather than borrowing: The charge appeared as a debit on my statement.

To debit an account is to subtract from it.
