overdraft

Account gone negative

An overdraft is a withdrawal from a bank account that exceeds the available balance, or the amount by which such a withdrawal exceeds the balance.

Banks may cover overdrafts as a service, charging fees for the privilege: I got hit with a $35 overdraft fee.

Overdraft protection links accounts to prevent declined transactions.

In British usage, an overdraft can also be a prearranged credit line: I'm living on my overdraft until payday.
