time deposit

Fixed-term account

A time deposit is money placed in a bank account that cannot be withdrawn before a specified date without penalty.

Unlike checking or savings accounts, time deposits lock funds for a fixed term—typically months or years—in exchange for higher interest rates.

Certificates of deposit (CDs) are the most common type: The six-month time deposit pays 4.5% annually.
