grenades
Pull-pin throwable bombs
Grenades are small explosive devices thrown by hand or launched from a rifle.
The classic grenade has a pin that, once pulled, starts a timer before detonation: He pulled the pin and lobbed the grenade into the bunker.
Figuratively, to throw a grenade into a situation is to introduce something disruptive or controversial.
Smoke grenades and flashbang grenades produce non-lethal effects.
The word comes from the French for pomegranate, which the early bombs resembled.
