megalopolis

Merged metropolitan region

A megalopolis is an extremely large urban region, typically formed when multiple cities and their suburbs expand until they merge into one continuous metropolitan area.

The term often describes the densely populated corridor stretching from Boston through New York to Washington, D.C.: The northeastern megalopolis contains over fifty million people.

Any vast urban sprawl may be called a megalopolis.
