boondocks

Far from civilization

Boondocks refers to remote, rural, or undeveloped areas far from urban centers—the middle of nowhere.

The word comes from Tagalog *bundok* (mountain), brought back by American soldiers from the Philippines.

It often carries connotations of isolation or backwardness: They live way out in the boondocks.

Usually shortened to the boonies in casual speech.
