Base camp is a main encampment providing supplies and shelter for expeditions, especially in mountainous terrain.
Climbers establish base camp at a relatively accessible altitude before attempting higher peaks: We spent three days at Everest base camp acclimatizing.
Figuratively, any central location from which operations are conducted: The coffee shop became our base camp for the project.
