fracking
Pressurized rock extraction
Fracking is hydraulic fracturing—a method of extracting oil or natural gas by injecting high-pressure fluid into rock formations to create cracks.
The technique has dramatically increased fossil fuel production but draws environmental criticism over water contamination, earthquakes, and methane emissions: The company wants to frack on protected land.
Often used pejoratively by opponents.
