gene regulation

DNA activity management

Gene regulation is the set of mechanisms controlling when, where, and how much a gene is expressed.

Cells contain the same DNA but become different types—muscle, nerve, skin—because different genes are turned on or off.

Regulation occurs at multiple levels: whether DNA is accessible, whether it gets transcribed into RNA, and whether that RNA becomes protein.

Researchers study gene regulation to understand how cancer cells escape normal controls.
