normal force

Perpendicular contact reaction

Normal force is the support force exerted by a surface against an object pressing into it, acting perpendicular to the surface.

When you stand on the floor, the floor pushes back against you with a normal force equal to your weight.

The normal force prevents the book from falling through the table.

In physics, "normal" here means perpendicular, not ordinary.
